San Clemente, Calif. – April 26, 2006 – Day one of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) four-star Body Glove Surfbout Presented by Adio began yesterday morning at Lower Trestles with overcast skies and small, clean conditions. Motivated by the $75,000 prize purse, valuable World Qualifying Series (WQS) points and the promise of better waves in an almost empty Lower Trestles line-up, competitors made the best of the challenging surf.

After a slow start to round one, Roger Eales looking smooth and quick on his feet, was rewarded for his efforts with two of the best scores of the morning, an 8.67 and 8.07. Other round one competitors who worked the small surf and managed to post solid score totals were Chris Drummy with a combine score of 14.93 and Dennis Rizzo with a combine total of 16.06.

“Guys are fired up to stay in this thing,” said event director Darren Brilhart. “They know that surfing Lowers when it’s on is worth digging in and doing everything they can to advance.”

Round two commenced at mid-day and with a little help from the tidal push, Lowers stayed contestable with light winds and improving glassy conditions. In heat three of that round Jeremy Jones posted the highest score of the day, an 8.83. But even with the day’s best wave, his second ride wasn’t enough to advance him in first place. Instead, it was Jeremy Johnston, with a pair of mid-range scores who made it to round three in the top slot.

In the most highly contested match-up of the day, Santa Cruz’s Jason “Ratboy” Collins, local Greg Long and seasoned competitor Chris Drummy took the heat down to the wire. Collins and Long dominated the majority of the twenty minute heat and it seemed Long would easily take first place, but just before the horn, Drummy, who was in rhythm all day, nabbed a buzzer beater and stole the top spot with a score in the low eights. “Greg actually let me have that wave,” said Drummy. “He was advancing, and he knew it, so he sort of gave me the nod when that one came through.” Collins, who seemed safely in the transfer slot, was bumped to third by Drummy’s last minute backside attack.

By the end of the day, with a swell scheduled to arrive later in the week, it was clear that those who advanced were relieved. “The early heats had a tough time. They’re fighting to advance and get the opportunity to surf decent Lower Trestles waves,” says Brilhart. “Surfers seeded into the higher rounds are stoked ‘because they know what’s in store for the weekend.”

The Surfbout is also the first stop of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series. The Trifecta was formed in 2005 as part of a three-year plan to strengthen surfing in America by uniting the Body Glove Surfbout presented Adio, the Newport Pro presented by Wavewatch, and the O’Neill Cold Water Classic under one banner. The Trifecta will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer that takes first-place in all three events. Should no one surfer take the win in all three events, the Trifecta also awards an overall points-winner bonus of $10,000.
