Live webcast available at www.bodyglovesb06.asglive.com
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., April 28, 2006 - Day three of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) four-star Body Glove Surfbout Presented by Adio, welcomed some of professional surfing's top competitors to world-famous Lower Trestles yesterday.
The round of 96 began with a strong series of impressive sets which poured through in the early morning. San Clemente's Chris Ward easily won his first Surfbout appearance while Chris Drummy and Greg Long continued to dominate their heats on their quest toward Saturday's finals.
Trestles local Shane Beschen looked comfortable at his home break, although he was scoreless for nearly half of the 20-minute heat. Beschen maintained his composure and late in the heat was able to grab the scores needed to give him the heat win. Southern California favorites Taylor Knox, Tim Curran and Pat O'Connell also advanced from their respective heats flooding the round of 64 with talent.
Asher Nolan, the 2005 Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series points champion, began his mission to defend his title and with his first wave of the heat, took an early lead. With another solid wave score, Nolan looked likely to take first in the heat, but in the last moments before the horn, San Diego native Che Stang posted an 8.67 for the win. "I felt like I was struggling for the whole heat, but when I got that last one I knew I needed to come up big," said Stang.
Fierce competitor Chris Drummy continued to advance all the way from the round of 192 and continue his incredible Surfbout run. Young gun Alex Gray, who's also competing in Friday's Oakley Pro Junior, hung onto an impossible looking floater which allowed him to advance into the Surfbout's round of 32.
In the last heat of the day, solid and consistent sets marched through the Lower's lineup as a new northwest wind swell began to fill in. Damien Hobgood came on strong and claimed first in a match-up stacked with talent. Hobgood posted a 9.33 on his first wave with a massive series of forehand turns. Also looking strong and advancing from the tough heat was former WCT surfer Shea Lopez.
The Body Glove Surfbout Presented by Adio will commence tomorrow at 8 a.m. with the remainder of the round of 64, the entire round of 32 and the first round of the Oakley Pro Junior where top surfers under the age of 20 will compete for the $10,000 prize purse. Live scoring and press updates of both events are available at www.bodyglovesb06.asglive.com.
The Surfbout is also the first stop of the Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series. The Trifecta was formed in 2005 as part of a three-year plan to strengthen surfing in America by uniting the Body Glove Surfbout presented Adio, the Newport Pro presented by Wavewatch, and the O'Neill Cold Water Classic under one banner. The Trifecta will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer that takes first-place in all three events. Should no one surfer take the win in all three events, the Trifecta also awards an overall points-winner bonus of $10,000.
