BODY GLOVE SURFBOUT PRESENTED BY ADIO FOOTWEAR RETURNS TO WORLD FAMOUS LOWER TRESTLES
- Four-Star Event Kicks Off Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series -
San Clemente, Calif., March 27, 2006 -- In its 14th year, the prestigious Body Glove Surfbout presented by Adio returns to the world famous Lower Trestles in San Clemente for the first stop of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series. In addition to this World Qualifying Series (WQS) 4 Star event taking place April 25-29, 2006, Lower Trestles will also host the Oakley Pro Junior from April 27-29, 2006. This five-day world-class surfing event will feature top-tier professional surfers, local surf hopefuls, domestic and international junior competitors and supporters of the renowned Trestles break.
Touted as one of the most impressive WQS events, the Body Glove Surfbout presented by Adio will feature 192 of the world’s best surfers battling for the impressive $75,000 prize purse and valuable WQS points. In the Surfbout’s 14 year history, past winners have included seven-time World Champion Kelly Slater, 2003 World Champion Andy Irons and local Southern California stars Rob Machado, Taylor Knox and Shane Beschen, as well as the 2005 winner, South African David Weare. “The tradition of the Body Glove Surfbout is to bring valuable points to the American ASP WQS surfers,” says Scott Daley, director of marketing for Body Glove. “We’re proud to be a partner in this event and are looking forward to another great week of surfing at Trestles.”
The Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series was formed in 2005 as part of a three-year plan to strengthen surfing in America by uniting the Body Glove Surfbout presented Adio, the Newport Pro presented by Wavewatch, and the O’Neill Cold Water Classic under one banner. The Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series provides surfers with an opportunity to earn crucial points on the WQS which in turn allows them the chance of advancing to the coveted World Championship Tour (WCT). The Trifecta will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer that takes first-place in all three events. Should no one surfer take the win in all three events, the Trifecta also awards an overall points-winner bonus. In 2005 Asher Nolan had a tremendous year and was awarded $5,000 for winning the Trifecta points bonus.
“Last year the Trifecta had a great points race going into the final contest and we’re excited to bring this opportunity back to surfers and looking forward to see who steps it up,” said Sean Nielsen, ASG’s director of event operations. This year, in an effort to continue the growth of the Trifecta events, ASG along with their partners, have increased the Trifecta points prize to $10,000 to reward performance and add to the level of excitement at each event. In 2007, to further increase involvement, ASG will upgrade the individual star ratings of the events.
The 2006 Body Glove Surfbout presented by Adio is happy to once again have media support from PRIMEDIA’s Action Sports Group (ASG), publisher of SURFER, SURFING and WaveWatch, as well as FUEL TV, and the SC Times. Other sponsors include Oakley and Amp’d Mobile. For surfing enthusiasts who can’t make it to Trestles, starting April 25th all of the action will be available to view online with streaming video and live scoring at http://bodyglovesb06.asglive.com.
